York was loyal
A slave to William Clark
Twas favored by the Indians
Just because his skin was dark

The Indians thought ofhim
As a warrior
A fighter

They appreciated his skills too
His hunting and fighting
Though he was so loyal
He didn’t leave Clark for them

Did the Americans treat him similar
Of course not
He was a slave
That’s all he was worth, they thought

When he asked for freedom
Clark said no
Though as of now
He’s rising to the top
From below
