Feeling Blessed

a heritage poem by Annabelle Z.

Mexico is the reason why

I stand here today

If my grandparents never left Mexico

My parents would have never met

After some years of

Dolls, jump ropes, and teddy bears

She met my father

While out to dinner one night

Growing up

She stayed home alone

While my grandparents worked

To entertain herself

She listened to her Walkman

And played with her toys

Eating by herself was not ideal

But it was necessary

I feel very blessed

To have parents that

Know what it’s like to be home alone

And work very hard to make sure I don’t
